Biogas production plant IERAPETRA / Biogas production plant SITIA

Two  new biogas power plants with a total capacity of 2000 kW are under construction in Crete, namely in Ierapetra and Sitia.

Increased agricultural production combined with tourism create great needs for the management of the many organic wastes produced in the area.

The two biogas plants in Sitia and Ierapetra will upgrade the environmental infrastructure of Lassithi. The processing in the two biogas plants of organic waste from greenhouses and olive mills will provide a solution to their management, which is essential for local producers, eliminating many illegal landfills in various areas, which pose health risks to residents, acting as small ecological bombs. The two biogas plants are expected to use around 150,000 tonnes of waste per year, relieving already overcrowded landfills.

This waste, both liquid and solid, is greenhouse waste, agricultural waste, olive oil production waste, cheese factory waste and other organic residues, used for the production of electricity and heat.

The electricity generated is estimated at 16 million kW per year and would be enough to supply 32,000 households with electricity and 1,200 with thermal energy.

The two investments will contribute to the development of the wider area and the improvement of the quality of life.

Furthermore, the biogas plants  produce heat and fertilizer which account for the majority of costs for greenhouses in the area, thus helping Greek greenhouse products can become more competitive.

At the same time, the treatment of goat dung in these plants offers a unique solution for the mills in the region, by converting their waste into electricity, heat and fertilizer.

    Gasification plant AGRIGAS S.A.

In Platykambos Larissa, the biomass is converted through gasification into syngas, which is then led for combustion in an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), thus converting into electrical and thermal energy through the electricity generator.

Biomass gasification is an endothermic thermal process through which solid biomass is converted into a combustible gas.

About 4,500 tonnes of straw from corn, wheat and cotton residues are converted into pellets and produce 3.5 million kWh of electricity on an annual basis.

The energy produced can supply about 8,000 households with electricity and about 500 households with thermal energy.

Gasification offers significant advantages, given that it converts a traditional low-quality fuel into a high-quality gaseous fuel. This conversion provides very high efficiency and its effects throughout the process are significant.

    Biogas plant in Tempi, Greece

In Gonnus Tempi, the biogas is converted into electricity and thermal energy through an internal combustion generator.

For the production of biogas, livestock and agricultural waste, as well as the by-products of oil mills, cheese factories, food production industries are used as raw material.

Its annual processing capacity is 31.000.000 kg, providing immense help in dealing with the major problem of waste that pollutes the environment.

About 5,000 cubic metres of biogas are produced per day, i.e. about 4 million kWh per year.  The produced energy could provide electricity for about 8,000 households and thermal energy  for300.
